Figure Skating Scholarship Program |
| |
The Pioneer Fund has established a scholarship program to assist eligible current and former amateur and professional ice skaters who dedicated their lives to skating and now wish to pursue a college education. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time undergraduate study at an accredited institution of the student's choice. Eligible individuals are skaters who have competed at least once in a U.S. Figure Skating qualifying competition at the novice level or higher in singles, pairs or ice dancing.
The Pioneer Fund is a foundation of the late Helen M. McLoraine. She established The Pioneer Fund, a private family foundation, in the 1960s, to continue her lifelong tradition of support to the types of projects and organizations to which she had contributed throughout her lifetime and now through her estate. McLoraine, deeply influenced by her mother’s dedication to philanthropy, became a generous benefactor to others with a focus on figure skating, higher education assistance and medical research.
Although McLoraine continued to run her own private successful investment business throughout her lifetime, her most cherished pastime was supporting the sport of figure skating. She attended many competitions, events and ice shows annually.
The door to McLoraine’s apartment, which originally opened inward the way that most doors do, was changed to open out to the world to indicate the way she embraced life and invited others to do the same. McLoraine passed away in January 2003 doing one of the many things she enjoyed in life, watching young kids in figure skating rinks, working to achieve their dreams.

| First-ever U.S. Gold in Juvenile for Synchroettes |

|
(03/04/2010) - The Synchroettes wished upon a star, and on Thursday night at the Mariucci Arena, their wish came true. The skaters from West Orange, N.J., were awarded the first gold medal of the 2010 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., when they won the juvenile division, earning five first-place ordinals in the process. |
This is the first gold medal for the team representing the Essex Skating Club, which placed fourth at this event last year.
"It wasn't about the place we got," said skater Irene Petrocelli, "It was how we skated."
When asked what they would do to celebrate their victory, the team stuck with their "When You Wish Upon A Star" theme, answering, "We're going to Disney World!"
